Bed bugs are one of the worst pests Connecticut residents can encounter in their homes. Bed bugs feed on human blood. There’s nothing more unsettling than waking up with red, itchy bites all over your arms, legs, and body.
We receive many bed bug questions here at Envirocare. Here are answers to several frequently asked questions about bed bugs.
How do you know if you have bed bugs?
You’ll know—the bites will be unbearable. There are several telltale signs of a bed bug infestation besides the bites themselves, however.
Bed bugs are small but you can still seem them with the naked eye. Look for tiny insects on the metal frame, the box spring, and the headboard.
Strip the bed and look for blood stains and fecal matter, which will look like pepper spots at the bed tufts.
Most homeowners won’t feel the bed bugs biting during the night. Most feeding takes place between 2:00 – 3:00 AM.
What do bed bugs look like?
Bed bugs are tiny reddish brown 1/8” long bugs which hide in the mattress, box spring, and headboard and, not as commonly, found in kitchens or bathrooms. Their bodies are oval with a clearly visible head and very flat. Nymphs (immature stages) are translucent until their first blood meal and are reddish after that.
How do I get rid of bed bugs?
It can be very difficult to get rid of bed bugs without professional pest control treatment. Some homeowners try bed bug mattress covers with varying degrees of success.
Some other tips:
• Don’t pick up used furniture
• Keep suitcases off the ground when traveling
• Don’t stay with anyone that has had bed bugs
Do bed bug mattress covers work?
Yes and no. Bed bug mattress covers sometimes work, provided you have the right size cover for your mattress and have a cover for your box spring, too. Bed bugs are resourceful, though, and can get through even the tiniest hole in your mattress cover.
Mattress covers alone may not be enough to prevent a bed bug infestation, however. The only way to get rid of bed bugs in your home is through professional treatment service from a pest control company like Envirocare Pest Control.
