Bat Guano Anyone?

The following is an account of a bat inspection which later turned into a bat exclusion in Washington, CT.

We were called to this particular home for a bat in the house. Upon getting to the home we provided an inspection in the attic areas.  Bats we found congregating in the attic around the louver vents, ridge vents and hanging from the ceiling.  There was a moderate amount of guano, but certainly nothing we hadn’t seen before.

However, nothing could have prepared us for what we saw in the barn.  Upon opening the barn doors we were hit with the pungent odor of bat guano and urine.  We also found a large tarp draped across the middle of the barn that had about 50 lbs of accumulated bat guano resting inside.

We asked the homeowner about it and evidently the tarp had been up for 2 years.  They actually worked around the tarp when retrieving things from the barn.  The outside of the barn had easily identifiable “grease marks” at the bat entrance points.

We provided the homeowner with an estimate to cleanup the bat guano and provide bat exclusion services.

We’ll have to wait till next year to see if we were successful.
