Get rid of mosquitoes: Is it possible?

If you want to get rid of mosquitoes an insecticide isn’t the only answer.  The fact is that mosquitoes are in your yard for a reason.  In order to lessen the number of mosquitoes you must know where and how to treat and get rid of conducive conditions for them.

The mosquito life cycle is important to know

In order to get rid of mosquitoes you’ll need to know their life cycle.  As with other living organisms there’s a male and a female.  The males feed on nectar and spend the vast majority of daylight hours in vegetation and on the underside of leaves. The males don’t bite.  However, while the male is lounging the female is busy laying eggs in areas where water is likely to congregate and the females do bite to get a blood meal.  Once the water is present the life cycle starts and eggs turn into larva.

Here are some of the most common places where mosquitoes spend their time:

Toys, bird baths and tires

What a strange list of items, but believe it or not they’re breeding grounds for mosquitoes.  The one thing that all these items have in common is they trap water.  After the water is trapped they become a perfect place for a mosquito to breed.  If you want to get rid of mosquitoes you have to get rid of standing water.

Clogged gutters

Do you live in an area where your gutters are prone to becoming clogged? Are your gutters in good shape?  Your gutters are a breeding ground for mosquitoes.  If you want to get rid of mosquitoes a yearly gutter cleaning or gutter guard installation is a must.

Water retention ponds

If you have a serious water issue and have a water retention pond nearby chances are it has breeding mosquitoes.  The best way to combat this is to keep the water moving with an aerator or add a product called a mosquito dunk.  These blocks of BTI will go a long way toward killing immature mosquitoes.

Mosquito treatment for your yard

A yard treatment is the last way to get rid of mosquitoes and an integral part at that.  A perfect yard spray will include treating around  the perimeter, under gutters, around foliage, dense vegetation, under decks and many other areas where mosquitoes spend their daytime resting hours. Any treatment received won’t be 100%, but I’ve yet to encounter the yard with a mosquito issue that couldn’t benefit from it.
